Subcontractor, ISEC, Inc. and material supplier, Heppner Hardwoods, Inc. teamed up to help achieve the ultimate in green building: the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum rating. This rating is in compliance with UCSD policy.

Project Details: 4/4 – 8/4 FSC Cumaru 4/4 – 8/4 FSC Ipe

  • 14,000 Linear Feet of 100% pure FSC kiln dried Cumaru siding. Cumaru decking planks placed end to end are 38 times the length of a football field
  • 35,000 Linear Feet of kiln dried 8/4 FSC Cumaru sun shades
  • 100 Benches constructed from FSC 8/4 Ipe
  • 125 Trash enclosures constructed from FSC 4/4 Cumaru

36,000 Square Feet, three story high building perched on a bluff overlooking the pristine La Jolla Shores Drive coastline, was not exactly welcomed by the local and Green community. Although the building was well within California Coastal Commission (CCC) mandates, THA Architectural Firm made adjustments to address relevant issues.

  • modified the overall building footprint
  • shifted the position of the building on the site
  • removed all mechanical equipment and exhaust fans from the roof
  • sunk the building further into the site
  • reduced interior ceiling height to the absolute minimum.

In 2010 ISEC approached Heppner with a materials list that called for siding and sun shades manufactured from FSC Ipe. Heppner consulted with their direct importer, Bozovich Timbers, regarding the availability of FSC Ipe and while it was possible to procure the FSC Ipe from Bozovich holdings, it was too late in the cutting cycle to get enough IPE, especially the specified 8/4 Ipe. As a result HHI and Bozovich recommended FSC, kiln dried Cumaru. Through a series of samples and testing, ISEC reached an agreement with THA Architectural and ultimately the FSC Cumaru was approved.

The dedication and first tour of the building were held June 14, 2013. The event included a presentation by Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
